Alfred, N.Y. -- Mount Aloysius men's basketball suffered a conference loss on the road this Saturday to the Alfred State Pioneers.
The Mounties had difficulties on both ends of the court, uncharacteristically struggling to score inside while the Pioneers maintained high shooting efficiency. The visitors fell behind early, going down 14 points after ten minutes of play. Junior guard
Will Hagwood (Willowick, Ohio, South) would lead his team in scoring, hitting four threes but finding most of his success from the charity stripe en route to 28-points. Deep into the first half, the Mounties would pound the paint again, with senior forward
Reggie Priah (Cleveland, Ohio, Euclid) scoring to cut the Pioneer lead to seven heading into the second.
The second half would quickly get away from Mount Aloysius, with the visitors finding themselves in a 19-point hole following five minutes of play. Funneling their offense through essentially a single guard, the Pioneers would shoot 70% from the field in the second half, doubling the efficiency of the Mounties in the same length of time. Despite troubles with efficiency, a fast pace of play would land four Mounties in double digit scoring, with forward
De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin) and guard
Alphonso Morrow (Baltimore, Md., Parkville) joining Priah and Hagwood in contributing 70 of the Mounties 82 points.
Alfred State's lead would climb as high as 27 in the second. Mount Aloysius would keep a high energy level, increasing their activity on the boards as the game wound down. Despite the Mounties best efforts in cutting into the deficit, the Pioneers would capture the win 82-95.
Mount Aloysius hosts Wells College in another AMCC matchup this Wednesday, January 10th. Wells enters the contest 1-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference, coming off a 60-71 loss to Pitt-Greensburg.
