CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's volleyball team earned a decisive 3-0 win over AMCC first round opponent Hilbert this Wednesday, Nov 13.
The Mounties put together three strong sets against the conference tournament #5 seed, opening with a back and forth first consisting of traded three and four point runs. Even at 15-all, solid serving from sophomore
Maddie Myers (Altoona, Pa., Bishop Guilfoyle) and junior
Molly Richards (Naples, Fla., Naples) would help the Mounties take six of the next seven points, putting the hosts in strong position going into the final points of the set. Richards would end the contest with a team-high 14 kills, solidifying her #2 spot on the AMCC leader board in the stat. Two final Hilbert errors would end the first in the Mounties favor, 25-19.
Maintaining the momentum of the first set win, the Mounties immediately jumped out to a 9-1 lead, holding the separation for the rest of the set. Despite signs of life from the Hawks, including a six out of seven point run midway through the set, the Mountie serve and kill combination proved too much to handle. Sophomore
Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) would serve out the set, contributing an ace as the hosts took three points straight to take the second 25-17.
The third set would be the most closely contested of the three, with Hilbert finding leads throughout thanks to an uptick of Mountie errors. Holding their strongest advantage up 20-16, Hilbert would falter, committing a service error that stymied what seemed to be mounting Hawk momentum. The Mounties would make the most of the mistake, winning nine of the final eleven points to capture the set and the match. Two final Richards kills would put an end to the proceedings 25-22, sending the Mounties in the AMCC semifinals.
The Mounties advance to take on AMCC #1 seed Alfred State this Saturday, Nov 16 in New York. The Pioneers earned the #1 seed with a 7-1 conference record and a 19-6 overall record this season, including a straight set defeat of Mount Aloysius in the final game of the regular season.
