Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mounties Go 1-1 in Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

YORK, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team fell to York College (2-2) before defeating Notre Dame of Maryland (1-4) in this year's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Tournament.

Game One (York)

The Mounties opened shooting well against York, shooting 66% from the floor and two-for-two from deep, but struggled to find defensive footing and consistent ball security. Committing fifteen turnovers across the opening ten minutes, the visitors would find themselves in a six point hole to York despite the hosts shooting sub-40% from the field and just 1-11 from three.

The second would hold a dip in scoring for the Mounties, hitting just a fourth of their shots en route to a nine-point quarter. York would improve to 50% marks from both inside and outside the arc, sending themselves into halftime with a fourteen point lead. Junior forward Angelina Kohlwaies (Lake Worth, Fla., Cardinal Newman) would lead the Mounties in first half scoring with eleven of her final fourteen points coming in the opening twenty minutes. Sophomores Molly Kosmack (Homer City, Pa., Homer-Center) and Annalyn Isaacs (Mars, Pa., Mars) would join Kohlwaies in double-digit scoring outputs.

The final half would see a battle back from the Mounties, as the visitors would outscore York amid wildly oscillating shooting efficiency from the hosts. Finding better looks in the fourth, York would begin to pull away, as Mount Aloysius continued to struggle with turnovers until the final whistle. The Mounties would finish with thirty-two turnovers for the game, giving York fifteen more shot attempts for the contest, falling 53-67 to the hosts in the first game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Game Two (Notre Dame)

Both teams would start the game slow, shooting sub-50% from the field while struggling to connect on threes. Notre Dame would carve out a slight lead, knocking down a late deep ball to exit the quarter with a three point lead. The Mounties would respond with an uptick in defensive intensity, shutting Notre Dame down in the paint. The Gators would hit less than a quarter of their shots from the floor in the quarter, while sophomore forward Molly Kosmack would come alive, scoring twelve of her final eighteen points in the second on 5-6 shooting. Kosmack would add two blocks and nine rebounds into her stat line by the end of the game, leading her team in all three categories.

Tied at 34-34 going into halftime, the Mounties would put together their strongest ten minutes of the game after the break, outscoring their opponent by fourteen on 57% / 43% / 100% team shooting splits. The Mounties perimeter defense plagued the Gators in the third, recording five steals in the quarter while holding Notre Dame to 33% shooting from the floor without a three-point make. Carrying heavy momentum into the final ten minutes of the game, the Mounties would slow the pace, shutting down any offensive opportunities the Gators attempted to start. Notre Dame would hit just a single shot from the floor in the fourth quarter, recording 7% shooting efficiency while scoring just four points. The defensive efficiency of the Mounties would seal the game, pushing Mount Aloysius to a 69-47 team victory.
