PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team improved to 4-1 this season with a commanding 78-43 defeat of Valley Forge (1-5). This marks the best five-game start to a season the Mountie women have had in twenty years, a span including the Mountie women joining both the AMCC (2004-05) and the NCAA (2008-09).
Consistent defense would lead the Mounties to victory throughout the game, as the visitors would hold their opponent to 11 or less points in all four quarters. Sophomore forward
Molly Kosmack (Homer City, Pa., Homer-Center) would lock down the paint, recording four blocks while leading her team in scoring and rebounding with 16 and 14 respectively. Kosmack's presence on the boards and efficient offense also places her in the top spot for points per game and rebounds per game in the AMCC, while holding the third highest field goal percentage in the conference.
Taking a fourteen point lead into halftime after holding their opponents to just 10/39 shooting from the floor, the Mounties would dominate the third, shooting 57% from deep to record their highest scoring quarter of the contest. Guards
Angelina Kohlwaies (Lake Worth, Fla., Cardinal Newman) and
Mariah Hall (New Enterprise, Pa., Northern Bedford) would join Kosmack in double-digit scoring, combining for 25 of the Mounties' final 78 points. Kohlwaies would also prove active on the defensive end, leading her team in steals for the game with four. Hall's two steals would keep her even with Kohlwaies on the conference leader boards, as the two Mounties both currently occupy the 7th highest steal per game rate in the AMCC (2.0 spg). Outscoring the Patriots by ten in the final quarter, the Mounties would extend their lead to the final whistle, recording their largest margin of victory this season in the 78-43 win.
The Mounties open up conference play this Tuesday, Nov 26, at home against Penn State Altoona. The Lions enter the contest 2-4 this season, coming off a 69-63 win over Penn College.
