Mounties Close Curtain on Season with Loss to Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. -- On Saturday, the Mount Aloysius Men's Basketball team dropped their season finale to Hilbert, in a close contest. The Hawks (12-13, 8-10 AMCC) led by as many as nine points in the first half, but the Mounties stayed within reach before falling, 80-77.

Jr. F Reggie Priah (Cleveland, Ohio / Euclid) led the Mounties in the first half, producing 17 points and seven rebounds before the break. He finished the contest with a season-high, 30 points, and 16 rebounds. Priah gave the Mounties their biggest and only lead of the first half, scoring the first five points of the game. Hilbert answered with a 16-2 run for their biggest lead of the game, in the first five minutes. Mount Aloysius would claw their way back and trim the lead to two on a Trent Ramirez-Keller (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) jumper with under 30 seconds remaining, 38-36.

In the second half, the teams were evenly matched, trading the lead back and forth frequently. Hilbert had the biggest lead of the period, when they took a 62-54 advantage with just over eight minutes remaining. The Mounties quickly cut that to two points with back-to-back threes by Will Hagwood (Willowick, Ohio / South). Hagwood had 15 of his 24 points in the second half. Unfortunately, every time the Mounties got a one point lead in the second half, Hilbert would answer to take it back and ultimately finish the game with the lead.

Heading into the day, the Mount Aloysius-Hilbert winner still had a chance to make the AMCC Tournament, coupled with a loss by Penn State Altoona. However, Penn State Altoona knocked off top-seeded, La Roche, on Saturday 80-73, to dash the postseason hopes of both squads. The Mounties finish the season with a 9-16 record, going 7-11 in AMCC play. They are set to lose just three players to graduation, after showing quite a bit of improvement in 2023-24.
