Hamburg, N.Y. -- Mount Aloysius men's volleyball dropped a conference matchup this Saturday, March 30th against the Hilbert College Hawks.
Leaders:
- Junior
Matthew Franz (Johnstown, Ohio, Bishop Hartley) led the Mounties in kills with nine.
- Freshman
Evan Schmidt (Loganville, Pa. , Dallastown Area) led the Mounties in both assists and digs, recording 19 and 8 respectively.
How It Happened:
- The Mounties fell into an early hole in the first set, facing a 5-9 deficit after a series of Hilbert kills capped with an ace.
- Struggling to find consistent scoring opportunities, the visitors earned a chance at a late set comeback, scoring an ace and a block to go along with an opponent error to bring the set within four points late.
- Hilbert responded immediately, securing the set with a series of kills as the Mounties struggled with error-prone play, 25-18.
- Dropping the first two points of the second, the Mounties would refocus, winning five straight to earn the early 5-2 lead.
- Not to be outdone, Hilbert would respond harshly, killing five of the next six balls and taking the lead back.
- The set would continue on as a series of back and forth four and five point runs, leading to a close game at 14-16.
- The Hawks would suddenly take charge, winning nine of the next twelve points to capture the set 25-17.
- The third would progress differently than the second, with neither team putting together sizable runs, instead collecting one or two points at a time before losing serve.
- An even game at 15-all, Hilbert would earn a three point swing as the Mounties struggled to match their opponent's hitting percentage.
- Despite a late match push, Hilbert's offense would prove too effective, and the Mounties would fall 25-23 in the third.
Into the Box Score:
- Hilbert earned 17 more kills as a team than the Mounties.
- Serving stayed relatively equal, as both teams picked up three aces for the match.
