Mounties Tough Defense Holds off Redhawks

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Lacrosse team hosted La Roche in an AMCC contest. The matchup was the Mounties' (4-4, 2-1 AMCC) third contest in conference, but it opened up the conference slate for the Redhawks (2-6, 0-1 AMCC).

The Mounties had a strong defense that kept La Roche off the board in both the second and third quarters, allowing the home squad to grab a four goal advantage and hold on for the victory.

In the first quarter, the Mounties scored first to grab a 1-0 lead, on a goal by Katie Figinski (Abingdon, Md. / Edgewood). La Roche answered with three goals of their own, followed by two Mountie markers, tying the game at three just ten minutes into the contest. The teams split the final two goals of the period, leaving the score at 4-4.

In the second quarter, the defense and un-sung heroes provided for the Mounties, as three different players scored and La Roche was held scoreless. Brenna Dobson (Lewistown, Pa. / Mifflin County), Hanna Geissler (Irwin, Pa. / Norwin), and Clara Larios-Soto (Laurel, Md. / Laurel), all three scored to grow the Mountie lead to 7-4 heading into the halftime break.

Figinski scored the only Mountie goal in the third quarter, but La Roche did not score, again, as the Mounties led by four goals heading into the fourth quarter. While the teams traded goals most of the period, the closest La Roche got was 10-7, with just over two and a half minutes to play. Mount Aloysius would outscore the visitors 2-1 over the final two minutes, solidifying the 12-8 victory.

The Mounties' leading scorer, Figinski, finished with a game-high, five goals and five assists. That brings her yearly totals to 25 goals and eight assists, both leading the team.

Mount Aloysius will begin their second time through the conference schedule, on Saturday, when they travel to Hilbert. The Mounties topped the Hawks, 19-0, this past weekend, and will look to sweep the season series.
