ALTOONA, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team made the short trip down the mountain to play AMCC-rival, Penn State Altoona. In a low scoring doubleheader, the Mounties (13-11, 7-5 AMCC) split the series with the Lions (14-15, 7-7 AMCC).
Game One moved in hyper speed, with just four total hits through the first six innings. Mount Aloysius then broke out in the top of the seventh, as
Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa. / Bishop Canevin),
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa. /Â Armstrong), and
Annalyn Isaacs (Mars, Pa. /Â Mars), all singled to load the bases with nobody out.Â
Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va. / Charles Cogan) then hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Cypher from third base to go ahead, 1-0.
Mountie starter,
Sierra Walters (East Freedom, Pa. /Â Claysburg-Kimmel), allowed one of her three hits in the seventh inning, but shut the door on the Lions to earn the shutout victory. Walters struck out three batters and allowed just four total baserunners.
Both teams played another low-scoring affair in Game Two. In the bottom of the first inning, Penn State Altoona picked up their only two runs of the day, on a two-run homer with two outs.
In the top of the fourth inning,Â
Kendra Gardner (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union) walked to lead off the inning. Then, with two outs Isaacs singled to give the Mounties runners on first and third.Â
Grace Gardini (York, Pa. / York Catholic) followed Isaacs with an infield single to push Gardner across, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Mounties tallied three hits over the final three innings, but were unable to tie the game. Despite getting tagged with the loss,Â
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa. /Â Crestwood) allowed just three hits after the first inning, keeping the team in a position for a chance to win.
Cypher led the Mounties, at the plate, going 4-for-7 overall and scoring the winning run in Game One.
Mount Aloysius is set to host Pitt-Bradford, on Saturday. The Panthers are currently 18-8 on the season, with a 7-3 record in AMCC play. They have won four straight games.
