BRADFORD, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team wrapped up their final conference games for the 2024 season, on Friday, when they traveled to Pitt-Bradford. With two victories, the Mounties (21-14, 11-5 AMCC) guaranteed themselves at least a share of the AMCC Regular Season Championship. Due to other conference games being played on Sunday, the Mounties will have to wait to officially determine the final rankings.
In Game One, the Mounties grabbed an early lead against Pitt-Bradford. They scored two runs in the first inning, both coming with the bases loaded and two outs.
Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg)Â drove home the first run, on an infield single and
Cole Harkness (Hughesville, Md. / Saint Mary's Ryken)Â followed with another infield single, plating two runs in the process. They added insurance runs in the second and third innings.
Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney)Â drove in the Mounties' run in the third inning, with an RBI single, putting the Mounties ahead, 4-0.
Tunison added another RBI, with a groundout, in the fifth inning, extending the Mounties' lead to 5-0. Pitt-Bradford cut into the Mountie lead, scoring twice, in the sixth inning. They tallied three straight, two-out hits, making the score 5-2. Mount Aloysius'
Tanner Abrams (Pleasantville, Pa. / Titusville)Â earned the save in the seventh inning, tossing a 1-2-3 frame to solidify the victory.
Mount Aloysius kept the momentum, scoring first again in Game Two. They scored their first run without recording a hit, to go ahead 1-0 in the first inning.
Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. /Â Derry)Â added an RBI single in the sixth andÂ
Tyler Weber (Hollsopple, Pa. /Â Conemaugh Twp) singled to drive in a run, in the fourth, putting the Mounties up 3-0. They added another run, in the fifth, on a Harkness sacrifice fly, giving them a 4-0 cushion.
Pitt-Bradford chased Mountie starter,
John Luke Bailey (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley Area), in the sixth inning, scoring twice. Bailey had an efficient start to that point, with five scoreless frames to start the game on just 50 pitches. He still left the game with the lead and would be in line for the win.
While the Panthers scored again in the seventh inning, making it a one run game, the Mountie bullpen held strong, including 1.1 innings from
Chris Hasse (Johnstown, Pa. /Â Westmont Hilltop). Hasse would earn the save, securing the Game Two victory and the series sweep.
Mount Aloysius' sweep of Pitt-Bradford secures their first Regular Season Championship in program history. Depending on Penn State Behrend's series, on Sunday, the results will determine if the Mounties will be outright champions or co-champions. The results will also determine final conference standings and playoff implications.
Before any postseason play, the Mounties will host Juniata, on Sunday, for a single, nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
