Cresson, Pa. -- Mount Aloysius men's volleyball ended their 2024 campaign with a 3-2 win over Wells College this Saturday, April 6th.
Leaders:
- Junior
Andrew Wlodarczyk (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) led the Mounties in kills, earning 20 across the five sets of action.
- Freshman
Evan Schmidt (Loganville, Pa. , Dallastown Area) led both teams in assists with 51.
- Freshman
Corey Obeldobel (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell) led the team in digs, picking up 12.
How It Happened:
- The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams finding kills while trading the occasional service error.
- Down 19-20, the Mounties seemed ready to make a final push for the set, but a service error and four kills proved insurmountable for the hosts, giving Wells the first 25-22.
- Coming back strong, the Mounties would open the second with a 7-2 lead, bolstered by a handful of blocks.
- Up 17-10, the Mounties suddenly began struggling with service returns, letting Wells back in the set at 19-18.
- Refocusing, the Mounties would establish themselves late, winning 6 of the last 7 points to take the set 25-19.
- Despite maintaining the momentum and taking a 12-8 lead in the third, the Mounties would find themselves down 17-16 behind a torrent of Wells kills.
- Things would only get worse from there in the set, as the Express would take 8 of the next 10 points en route to the 25-18 win.
- The Mounties again took a 12-8 lead in the following set, looking to correct past mistakes.
- Although the Express looked set to make a run at a variety of points, the Mounties held on, carving out two point swings to eventually grab the fourth 25-19.
- The fifth would be the closest set yet as both teams would find success on the attack.
- Even at 13-all, it looked to be anyone's set, before junior
Tayshaun Johnson (Uniondale, N.Y., Uniondale) would find the kill to give the Mounties a match point.
- Wells would find themselves in the net for the final point of the contest, giving the hosts the 15-13 5th set victory.
Into the Box Score:
- The Mounties earned 18 more kills than the visitors.
- Wells and Mount Aloysius were even in aces, each picking up six.
