CRESSON, Pa. -- On Friday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team began hosting their first-ever AMCC Tournament, which spans through Sunday. Unfortunately, the Mounties' homefield advantage did not help, as they were the first team to be eliminated on the weekend.
Mount Aloysius opened the day against Alfred State, who entered the weekend having beaten Penn State Altoona in the first round. Alfred State jumped on them early, with two runs in the top of the first inning, one of which was unearned. The Mounties got one back in the bottom half of the opening frame, thanks to a Pioneer throwing error, making the score 2-1 after one.
After scoreless second, third, and fourth innings, disaster struck for the Mounties. Eight of the first nine Pioneer batters reached base, as the Mounties would use three different pitchers and allow nine total runs, watching the Pioneers blow open the game, 11-1.
The Mounties continued to struggle, tallying just four hits over the final five turns at bat and grounding into two double plays. The lone bright spot came when
John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey)Â led off the seventh inning with a homerun to left field, making the score 11-2. That would be the last time the Mounties scored, as they dropped their opener, 11-2.
In Game Two against La Roche, the top of the first inning was not friendly to the home team again, as they saw the Redhawks score twice to grab a 2-0 lead. The pitching for both teams was solid, as the game was still 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry)Â pushed across the first run for the Mounties, with a suicide squeeze, cutting the lead in half, 2-1.
After La Roche grabbed a run back, making the score 3-1,
Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. /Â Osbourn Park)Â made the score 3-2, with an RBI single. He would later come around to score from second on a wild pitch, tying the game at three, heading into the final third of the game.
La Roche responded by scoring four runs on four hits in the seventh inning, while also leaving the bases loaded, taking a 7-3 lead. Mount Aloysius scratched one back when
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's)Â singled with two outs and scored from first on a
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., /Â Chopticon)Â RBI single to shallow centerfield.
The Redhawks added an insurance run in the eighth inning and held the Mounties scoreless in the final two innings, ending the Mountie season with an 8-4 loss.
Cook and Quade were both named to the All-Tournament team, following the conclusion of their second game today.
Mount Aloysius finishes the season with a 21-18 record, following the first regular season championship in program history.
