Mounties Come Up Short to Geneva, Miller Earns First Career Win

Cresson, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's tennis team suffered a 1-6 loss to the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes this Saturday, September 7th.

Although strong play from the middle of the lineup would provide the Mounties with some close matches, the Geneva bookends proved too strong for the hosts to handle, winning at the top and bottom lineup positions in straight sets. Although doubles would be a straight forward affair at one and three, the Mountie tandem of sophomore Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) and freshman Amelia Miller (Scottdale, Pa., Southmoreland) would go the distance at two doubles, each team holding serve and trading volley winners en route to a 6-6 scoreline. Back and forth throughout the first-to-seven tiebreaker, the Mounties would sail a final volley long to fall 6-7(5) to the visitors.

Undeterred by the close defeat in doubles, Miller would enter singles playing solid tennis, finding consistency on service return and low passes on opponent approaches. Taking the first set 6-2, the second set became a more physical affair, with Miller's opponent moving the Mountie around the court in all directions. Miller would hold on, chasing down every ball and mixing in firm down-the-line ground strokes to keep her opponent guessing. A final break of serve would end the contest 6-2 6-1 in favor of the Mounties. Miller's inaugural win would be the Mounties' sole victory on the day.

Sophomore Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland ) would also play a great match at three singles. Opening by trading shots from the baseline, Davis would have success setting up and finishing points from both her forehand and backhand, but found herself continually pushed back by her opponent's spin production and pace. Dropping the first set in a close 3-6 finish, Davis would fall into a 1-4 hole before adjusting her strategy, coming forward more frequently and breaking her opponent to get back on serve at 3-4. Although she would convert most approach opportunities with sharply angled volleys, Davis faced fewer and fewer chances to go forward as the set progressed, eventually falling 6-4 to the visitor.

The Mountie women return to action Friday, September 20th against conference opponent La Roche. La Roche enters the contest 0-1, coming off a 0-9 loss to Franciscan.
