HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team lost a conference game on the road this Saturday, Jan 18, coming up short to Hilbert College (11-6, 4-4 AMCC). Forward
De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin) would lead the Mounties with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Early turnovers would see the Mounties fall into a nine-point hole early in the first, only for the visitors to even the score at fifteen behind constant interior pressure. The closing ten minutes of the half would find the teams evenly matched, neither program able to pull more than a possession away from their opposition, eventually heading in to halftime locked even at 33-all. Both teams would struggle with efficiency, as the Mounties would post 43% / 28% / 42% shooting in the first twenty minutes, while the Hawks would shoot just 38% / 23% / 50%. Despite the poor shooting, the Hawks would gain an edge with extra possessions, grabbing thirteen offensive rebounds in the first, only five fewer than the Mounties total first half rebounding count.
While the Mounties would improve their shooting in the second half, converting just over 50% of their shots from the floor, the Hawks would come to life with a hot hand, shooting 63% from the floor and 45% from deep across the second half. The uptick in shooting was matched with continued rebounding from the hosts, who would end with thirteen more boards than the visitors. The shooting efficiency and the rebounding would prove overwhelming to the Mounties, who would find themselves outscored by eighteen across the final twenty minutes en route to a 69-87 loss.
The Mounties face a quick turn around, heading to Gwynedd Valley to take on Gwynedd Mercy this Monday, Jan 20, in a contest rescheduled from Jan 6. The Griffins enter the contest 13-2 this season and 2-1 in AEC play, coming off a 54-81 loss to Salisbury University.
