PITTSBURGH --- Fellow AMCC opponent Carlow University will have baseball for the first time. On Monday, former Mount Aloysius baseball player James Rice was named the head baseball coach at Carlow University.
Carlow University has announced the hiring of James Rice, a former Mount Aloysius baseball player, as the head coach of it's brand-new baseball program, which is set to begin competition in 2027. Rice, who played for the Mounties during his collegiate career (2019-2023), takes over as the first head coach in program history, marking a significant milestone in both his coaching career and Carlow's athletic expansion.
Rice was a member of the Mounties' 2022 AMCC Championship team that earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Following his time at Mount Aloysius, Rice gained valuable coaching experience, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Wilmington College in Ohio for two years. Prior to his time at Wilmington, the Leechburg, PA native spent three seasons coaching squads in the Old North State League, located in North Carolina.
His strong background as both a player and coach in the region makes him a natural fit to build and lead Carlow's program from the ground up. In addition to his coaching duties, Rice will be in charge of campus facilities and the intramural programs.
Former Mount Aloysius Head Baseball Coach and new Vice President for Athletics & Community Outreach Kevin Kime expressed his pride in Rice's accomplishments, saying he is "very proud of James Rice and how far he's come." Kime added that Rice is "a man of character who will represent a fellow Mercy institution well as their first baseball coach." He went on to say, "James is a great baseball person, but an even better young man."
Rice's appointment reflects Carlow's commitment to building a competitive and values-driven baseball program. With his leadership, regional connections, and dedication to developing student-athletes both on and off the field, Rice is poised to lay a strong foundation ahead of the team's inaugural 2027 season.
