Mounties Sweep Penn State Altoona To Begin AMCC Play

Box Score

CRESSON, Pa. — Mounties women's volleyball opened Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play in commanding fashion Tuesday night, sweeping the defending AMCC champions Penn State Altoona 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-10) at the ACWC.

In front of a lively home crowd of 320, the Mounties (13-6, 1-0 AMCC) put together one of their most complete performances of the season, hitting an impressive .367 as a team while limiting the visiting Lions (8-10, 0-1 AMCC) to just a .040 hitting percentage.

Mount Aloysius came out firing in the opening set, using a blistering .423 hitting percentage to cruise to a 25-13 win. The tone was set early, with Molly Richards (Naples, Fla., Naples) and Poliana Lazarini (Marialva, Brazil / Garrido) leading a balanced offensive attack, while the Mounties' defense forced Altoona into more errors than kills (5 kills, 6 errors).

The second set saw a more competitive effort from the Lions, who hit a respectable .147, but the Mounties were just as efficient, swinging at a .345 clip and pulling away late to take the set 25-16.

The third and final frame was all Mounties. They did not commit a receiving error all night and shut down the Lions' attack completely as they cruised to a 25-10 victory behind consistent service pressure and sharp attacking. Altoona was held to a .000 hitting percentage in the set, while the Mounties maintained their offensive rhythm.

Stat Leaders

  • Richards led all players with 16 kills while adding 9 digs.
  • Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) added 7 kills and her sister Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) led the team in digs with 21.

  • Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) and Kiersten Cummings (Las Vegas, Nev, Nevada State) paced the offense with 17 and 16 assists, respectively.

  • Cummings also led from the service line with 3 aces, followed by Lazarini (2) and Madison Barr (1).

On the defensive end, the Mounties racked up 53 digs to Altoona's 28, dominating the floor game and extending rallies with discipline and hustle.

The Mounties will look to add to their momentum on Saturday @ Alfred State (10-6), who lost in the AMCC Championship to Penn State Altoona last year.  The match will begin at 12 PM in the Orvis Gym in Alfred, NY.
