Little River, S.C. – The Mountie Softball team finally got to play on their spring break trip after the first two games were canceled due to weather conditions. Today, the Mounties played in a tripleheader, facing Mount Saint Vincent, Maine-Farmington, and St. Joseph's-Long Island in three straight games.
Game 1 vs. Mount Saint Vincent:
The Mounties opened their tripleheader against Mount Saint Vincent at 9 AM. After falling behind 4-0 in the second inning, the Mounties quickly turned the tide in the top of the third, scoring five runs to take the lead. They would maintain control for the remainder of the game, adding three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth. The Mounties won a close battle, 10-8.
Key players for the Mounties included
Maya Capozzoli (Camp Hill, Pa., Cedar Cliff), who went 2-3 with 3 RBIs.
Kendra Gardner (Mount Union, Pa. , Mount Union) also had a strong performance, driving in 2 runs.
Game 2 vs. Maine-Farmington:
In the second game of the tripleheader, the Mounties faced Maine-Farmington, coming off their 10-8 win in the first game. This game turned into a pitching duel between the two teams.
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) was the only pitcher for the Mounties, throwing all 7 innings. She recorded an impressive 11 strikeouts, allowed just 2 earned runs, and threw 117 pitches. However, the Mounties struggled offensively, resulting in a 4-0 loss.
Game 3 vs. St. Joseph's-Long Island:
The Mounties played their final game of the tripleheader against St. Joseph's-Long Island. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead, scoring 7 runs in the top of the first. The Mounties responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, but St. Joseph's added 4 more runs in the second. Both teams struggled to score after that, and the game ended with the Mounties falling 11-4.
Despite the loss, the Mounties had some solid individual performances.
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois) went 2-4 at the plate, batting .500.
Aisy Myers (Sidman, Pa., Forest Hills) also went 2-4 with an RBI, and
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) went 1-1 with a stolen base.
