Little River, SC – The Mount Aloysius Mounties continued their spring break trip with a doubleheader on Thursday, facing UMass Boston and Oswego State. The Mounties split the day, winning one and losing one.
GAME 1 vs. UMass Boston
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Mounties fell behind early, giving up 2 runs to UMass Boston in the first inning. The Mounties struggled to get on the scoreboard until the third inning, when
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) singled to right field.
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois) then came through with an RBI, bringing Cypher home.
Despite the effort, the Mounties would remain scoreless for the rest of the game, while UMass Boston added one more run. The Mounties ultimately lost the game 1-3.
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) pitched the full 6 innings for the Mounties, throwing 84 pitches and striking out 3 batters. She allowed just three runs in the contest.
GAME 2 vs. Oswego State
In the second game, the Mounties found themselves trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning. However, they responded with a strong offensive push, scoring 3 runs in the inning to take the lead. They added another run for insurance in the sixth inning.
The Mounties entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a 4-1 lead, but Oswego State made a late rally, scoring 2 runs. Despite the pressure, the Mounties held on to win 4-3, evening their record at 1-1 for the day.
Isabela Marquez (Greensburg, Pa., Greensburg Central Catholic) led the Mounties with 2 RBIs, while
Rylie Bednar (Brownsville, Pa., Brownsville Area HS) and
Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa. , East Juniata) each drove in one run.
