CRESSON, PA – The Mount Aloysius Mounties (11-8, 4-2 AMCC) hosted conference opponent the Penn State Behrend Lions (10-14, 5-3) this afternoon in a doubleheader, looking to build on their strong start to the season both in conference play and on their home field.
GAME ONE
The Mounties came out strong in the opening game, jumping to a 3-0 lead after just two innings. In the bottom of the first,
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois) doubled to left field, and a few batters later,
Sophie Smith (Mapleton Depot, Pa., Mount Union) drove her in with a single. The following inning,
Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) and
Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) each knocked RBI singles into the outfield to extend the lead.
Mount Aloysius added two more runs in the fourth inning, while Penn State Behrend got on the board as well.
Maya Capozzoli (Camp Hill, Pa., Cedar Cliff) led off with a single to right field, followed by a
Morgan Hassen (Northern Cambria, Pa., Northern Cambria) single that advanced Cappozzoli. Henninger then doubled to right-center, scoring Cappozolli and moving Hassen to third. Cole brought Hassen home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
However, the Mounties were held scoreless for the rest of the game, and Penn State Behrend mounted a late comeback, scoring six runs over the final two innings. Mount Aloysius ultimately dropped game one, 7-5.
Sierra Walters (East Freedom, Pa., Claysburg-Kimmel) pitched a complete game for the Mounties, throwing 118 pitches over seven innings. She struck out three and allowed four earned runs.
GAME TWO
The Mounties bounced back in dominant fashion in game two, scoring nine runs in just the first two innings.
Sarah Henninger led off the game with a triple to right field, and
Whitney Cole brought her home with an RBI single. The offensive explosion continued in the second inning, where
Kendra Gardner (Mount Union, Pa. , Mount Union) collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Henninger, Cole, and Cypher added RBIs in three consecutive at-bats, and
Sophie Smith capped off the eight-run inning with an RBI single of her own.
Mount Aloysius cruised to a 14-2 victory, ending the game in five innings.
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) got the win on the mound, pitching six innings and throwing just 76 pitches. She recorded six strikeouts and allowed only one earned run.

The Mounties will return to action on Monday, April 14th, as they host Juniata College in another doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
