PITTSBURGH, PA. – The Mountie Softball team (12-11, 5-3 AMCC) traveled to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to face conference rival La Roche (8-20, 1-7 AMCC) in a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one was thrown at 3:00 PM EST.
GAME ONE
Mount Aloysius entered the day looking to build momentum in conference play. They got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-out, bases-clearing triple by
Sophie Smith (Mapleton Depot, Pa., Mount Union).
However, the lead was short-lived. La Roche responded quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
The Mounties added one more run in the fifth inning.
Kendra Gardner (Mount Union, Pa. , Mount Union) and
Isabela Marquez (Greensburg, Pa., Greensburg Central Catholic) each singled, and Gardner later came around to score on a La Roche error. Despite the effort, the Red Hawks added two more runs of their own and took game one by a final score of 6-3.
GAME TWO
Looking to split the series, Mount Aloysius bounced back in dominant fashion in game two.
The Mounties took a 2-0 lead through three innings.
Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois) led off the first inning with a triple and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by
Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette). In the second inning,
Sophie Smith opened with a double and was driven in by a
Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa. , East Juniata) single.
Mount Aloysius extended the lead in the fourth inning, scoring four more runs to make it 6-0.
Kendra Gardner singled to center field, driving in two runs, followed by a two-run double from
Sophie Smith.
In the sixth, the Mounties tacked on four more runs.
Whitney Cole delivered an RBI single to left, and Gardner followed with a two-RBI triple. Gardner later scored on a La Roche error.
The Mounties shut out the Red Hawks in a 10-0 win.
Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) was lights-out on the mound, throwing a complete game. She tossed 76 pitches over six innings, allowing no earned runs and just two hits.

Mount Aloysius will hit the road again on April 19
th to face conference opponent Hilbert in another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
