CRESSON, Pa. -- On Friday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team hosted Hilbert in a crucial AMCC doubleheader. The Mounties (21-9, 4-4 AMCC) struggled to keep the Hawks (14-13, 4-4 AMCC) off the scoreboard, as the home team fell in both ends of the matchup.
Mount Aloysius got off to a solid start whenÂ
Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning, to give the Mounties a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, disaster struck in the third inning, as the Hawks posted ten runs in the frame and took control of the contest.
Hilbert added two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 14-2. The Mounties showed some life in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring four times.Â
Payton Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) delivered a pinch-hit, two-RBI double, then later scored on aÂ
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. /Â Chopticon) double. Quade would also score on an RBI single by
Jeremy Eck (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County), cutting the final score to 14-6.
Game Two saw a slower start, as the Hawks posted one run in the second and one in the third, while the Mounties were held scoreless through four frames. In the fifth inning, the Hawks broke the game open with five runs and a commanding, 7-0 lead. Mount Aloysius clawed back in the bottom of the inning, with an RBI fromÂ
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) and a rare, two-RBI sacrifice fly from Quade, making the score 7-3.
The Mounties would ultimately be outscored 9-2 over the next three innings, which caused the game to end after eight innings. Quade drove in the Mounties final two runs, with a double in the sixth inning, but it would not be enough as they fell, 16-5.
Mount Aloysius will travel to Wilson, on Monday, for a non-conference matchup with the Phoenix. The Mounties will then face Penn State Altoona, on Wednesday, in another crucial AMCC doubleheader. Penn State Altoona is currently 12-18 on the season, with a 3-5 record in AMCC play. They are set to play Penn State Behrend, on Sunday, prior to their matchup with the Mounties.
