JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius baseball team suffered their final defeat of the season in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Postseason Tournament, falling 10-5 to the #2 seed Alfred State Pioneers.
The Mounties opened the game hungry, loading the bases at the top of the second behind a trio of singles from
Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa., Everett),
Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg), and
John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md., Henry E. Lackey). Despite the advantageous position, the Mounties would stay scoreless, with the Pioneers escaping off a double play. Keeping momentum from the defensive result, Alfred State hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the third would spell trouble for Mount Aloysius, with Alfred State pouring in five runs on five hits. Struggling for consistent offense, the Mounties would face an eight run deficit going into the 7th inning. After a quick pair of runs off well-placed singles, Grove would give the Mounties hope, blasting a three-run homer to put the Mounties down just 8-5.
The Mounties would keep the energy up, looking for any chance to cut into the deficit, but a two-run outing from Alfred State at the bottom of the eighth would put the Mounties down 10-5 going into the final at-bats of regulation. Although a single and a walk would put the Mounties in position to make headway, a final strikeout would end the 2025 campaign in the 9th.
Mount Aloysius baseball ends with a 27-14 overall record, tied with the program record for wins in a single season. AMCC Postseason play continues throughout this week, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, May 10.
