CRESSON, Pa. - The Mount Aloysius women's volleyball team battled through five sets Saturday afternoon but came up short against Hilbert, falling 3-2 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup inside the Athletic Convocation and Wellness Center.
The Mounties came out firing, taking control early and winning the opening two sets. Mount Aloysius claimed the first set convincingly, 25-13, before edging the Hawks 25-23 in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Hilbert responded in the third set, using a late push to earn a 25-20 victory and extend the match. The Hawks continued their momentum in the fourth, overcoming the Mounties 25-23 to force a decisive fifth set.
In the final frame, Hilbert pulled away to secure a 15-11 victory, completing the comeback and handing the Mounties a heartbreaking 3-2 conference loss.
Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) led the Mounties offensively with a match-high 20 kills, hitting .341 while adding three service aces for 23.5 points. Loren Stipanovich (Cresson, Pa, Penn Cambria) delivered a strong performance with 14 kills, while Jada McGill (Fishertown, Pa, Chestnut Ridge) and Kyler Freeman (Lucinda, Pa., North Clarion)contributed six kills apiece.
Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) paced the Mount Aloysius offense with 24 assists and added three service aces. Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) anchored the defensive effort with a match-high 25 digs, while Kiersten Cummings (Las Vegas, Nev, Nevada State) chipped in 22 assists and 11 digs.
Despite the loss, the Mounties finished with 52 kills and 51 assists, continuing to battle throughout a tightly contested conference matchup. Mount Aloysius moves to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in AMCC play.
The Mounties will look to bounce back this Wednesday, October 14, when they welcome Penn State Altoona to the ACWC for the Pink Out match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. as Mount Aloysius looks to get back in the win column in front of its home crowd.
