CRESSON, Pa. — The Mount Aloysius College men's soccer team opened conference play in impressive fashion on Saturday, earning a 2-0 victory over Carlow University at Kelly Field.
The Mounties controlled the match from the opening whistle, creating consistent pressure in the attacking third and keeping Carlow without a shot on goal. Mount Aloysius recorded 14 shots in the opening half and finished the match with a commanding 35-1 advantage in shots, including 18 shots on goal. The Mounties also earned 14 corner kicks compared to just one for the Celtics.
Despite the offensive pressure, the match remained scoreless through the opening 45 minutes. Mount Aloysius finally broke through in the 53rd minute. Axel Qvarnstroem (Uppsala, Sweden, Katedralskolan ) found the back of the net off an assist from Aleksandr Fomin (Leander, Tex., Cedar Park), giving the Mounties a 1-0 advantage.
The Mounties continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, generating several additional scoring opportunities while maintaining control of possession. In the 80th minute, Zack Marshfield (Stroud, England, Stroud High Sixth Form) doubled the Mount Aloysius lead, scoring off an assist from Gonzalo Terricabris (Catalonia, Spain, Garbi Pere Verges) to make it 2-0.
The Mounties' defense took care of the rest, preserving the shutout through the final whistle. Sam Denchfield played all 90 minutes in goal and did not face a shot on target, earning the clean sheet.
Qvarnstroem led the Mounties with five shots and four shots on goal, while Terricabris added five shots and three shots on goal. Fomin recorded two shots on goal and an assist, while Marshfield added two shots and the insurance goal.
With the victory, Mount Aloysius improves to 3-5-3 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play. The Mounties will look to carry the momentum from their strong conference-opening performance into their upcoming matches.
