Alfred, N.Y. - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball season came to a close Monday night as the fifth-seeded Mounties fell 62-54 at fourth-seeded Alfred State in the opening round of the AMCC playoffs inside the Orvis Activities Center.
The Mounties battled toe-to-toe for much of the night and was within striking distance late, trimming the deficit to 53-50 with just under seven minutes remaining. The Pioneers then answered with an 8-0 run to seize control, pushing the margin to double digits before Molly Kosmack (Homer City, Pa., Homer-Center) scored with 1:27 left to halt the surge. Alfred State closed out the final possessions to advance.
Kosmack led all scorers with a strong postseason performance, pouring in 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding eight rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal in 38 minutes. Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Annalyn Isaacs (Harmony, Pa., Mars) connected on three triples and finished with nine points.
The Mounties shot 43.4 percent from the floor and outscored the Pioneers 38-24 in the paint, but Alfred State's edge on the glass (43-31) and at the free-throw line (13 made) proved decisive.
With the loss, the Mounties wraps up the year at 10-16 overall and 8-8 in AMCC play after pushing the higher seed deep into the fourth quarter in a hard-fought playoff road test.
