Myrtle Beach, SC - Mount Aloysius capped off its spring break trip in thrilling fashion on Wednesday, outlasting Colby-Sawyer in a wild 15-14 victory in a game that featured 29 total runs and momentum swings all afternoon.
The Mounties battled back multiple times, but it was a decisive five-run eighth inning that ultimately made the difference. Trailing 14-10 heading into the frame, Mount Aloysius stormed back behind timely hitting and patience at the plate. Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg)Â delivered an RBI single to get things started, followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and walk to bring the Mounties within one. Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa., Cocalico)Â then came through with the biggest swing of the inning, lacing a two-RBI single to give Mount Aloysius a 15-14 lead.
From there, Dawson Wetherald (Newburg, Md., Saint Mary's Ryken)Â shut the door in the ninth, earning his first win of the season and sealing the victory.
Offensively, the Mounties matched Colby-Sawyer with 17 hits in an all-around effort at the plate. McDermott led the charge offensively, putting together a 4-for-5 day with three runs and three RBIs while reaching the 100-career hit milestone, a fitting accomplishment in one of the Mounties' most exciting wins of the season so far. Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage)Â also had a huge day, finishing with three hits and five RBIs, including a two-run homer. Dickson added three hits, three RBIs, and a home run, while Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon)Â collected three hits and scored twice.
The Mounties showed resilience throughout, answering early deficits and continuing to chip away despite surrendering big innings in the fifth and seventh. In a game filled with offense and momentum swings, the Mounties had the final answer.
The win not only secured a thrilling finale to the trip but also showcased the team's fight, as they rallied late and leaned on clutch hitting to come out on top.
With the win, the Mounties head back to Cresson with a 6-10 record as they get ready for conference play. They begin conference play this weekend versus Alfred State (5-15). Although the DH is scheduled for Saturday right now, there's a good chance it gets moved to Sunday.Â
