Cresson, PA - Despite a solid start on the mound, Mount Aloysius was shut out by No. 21 Gettysburg, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Calandra-Smith Field.
The Mounties (6-13) hung tough early behind senior Tanner Abrams (Pleasantville, Pa., Titusville), who kept a potent Gettysburg (16-3) lineup off the board through the first three innings. Abrams worked five innings in total, striking out five while allowing four runs on 10 hits, giving Mount Aloysius a chance to stay within striking distance against one of Division III's top teams.
Gettysburg broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, using a two-RBI single from Brendan Laqui to take a 2-0 lead. The Bullets added two more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, stretching the advantage to 4-0. They continued to apply pressure in the seventh with another pair of runs, highlighted by an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, before tacking on a final run in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Offensively, the Mounties were limited to just four hits, with Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg)Â and Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony)Â each accounting for two hits apiece. McDermott was a bright spot in the middle of the lineup, consistently putting the ball in play, while Maseto added a pair of singles of his own.
Gettysburg's pitching staff proved dominant throughout, combining for 12 strikeouts and allowing just one walk. Starter Luca Tosca earned the win with four strong innings before the bullpen took over and kept the Mounties hitless until the ninth.
The Mounties will look to bounce back in its next outing after facing a nationally ranked opponent that showcased both depth at the plate and strength on the mound.
Baseball will travel to Franciscan University (1-9) tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one first pitch will be at 2pm, with game two to follow shortly after. The games will be played at Vaccaro Field in Steubenville, Ohio.
