Game Recap: Baseball |

Ranallo Shuts Door in Opener as Mounties Split with Lions

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with AMCC favorite Penn State Behrend, rallying for a comeback win in game one before dropping a high-scoring game two.

Game One: Mounties Rally Late to Earn 5-4 Comeback Win

Mount Aloysius overcame an early deficit to secure a 5-4 victory in the opener behind timely hitting and strong relief pitching.

Penn State Behrend jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to 4-0 in the fourth, capitalizing on early opportunities against starter Troy Misiura (Coalport, Pa., Glendale). The Mounties responded in the bottom half of the fourth, taking advantage of a Behrend error and manufacturing two runs to cut the deficit in half.

The decisive inning came in the fifth. After pushing across a run on an RBI groundout by Michael Todd (Pittsburgh, Pa., Seton LaSalle), Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa., Cocalico) delivered the big swing of the game, ripping a two-run double down the left field line to give Mount Aloysius a 5-4 lead.

From there, the Mounties bullpen shut the door. Scott Ranallo (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Hills) was dominant in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two to earn the win.

Dickson led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage) added a pair of hits and Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony) and Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon) each scored runs in game one.

Game Two: Behrend Explodes Early in 27-5 Victory

In game two, Penn State Behrend's offense erupted for 27 runs on 25 hits, highlighted by a 12-run first inning that put the game out of reach early.

Behrend sent 16 batters to the plate in the opening frame, collecting multiple extra-base hits including a three-run homer from Tyler Banks and a three-run blast from David Gibson. Gibson finished with a monster performance, going 4-for-4 with six RBIs, while Paul Connolly added four RBIs and scored five times.

The Mounties struggled to contain the Lions' lineup, using multiple pitchers (four in the first inning) in an attempt to slow the momentum.

Dickson recorded two more hits and an RBI, Tyler Day (La Plata, Md., La Plata) added two hits and a run driven in, and Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa., Everett) chipped in with an RBI double.

With the split, the Mounties move to 7-16 (1-3 AMCC) on the season. The Mounties continue conference play in their next matchup, with a short trip to Penn State Altoona (9-11, 0-4 AMCC) for a single nine-inning game on Wednesday. First pitch will be at 3:00 pm at the Stewart Athletic Field.
