CRESSON, Pa. — Mount Aloysius College bounced back to earn a split with La Roche University on Tuesday, dropping the opener before rallying for a 10-7 win in Game Two of a high-scoring doubleheader.
Game One: La Roche 7, Mount Aloysius 4
Mount Aloysius showed resilience throughout the opener but couldn't overcome a five-run fifth inning in a 7-4 setback.
After falling behind 1-0, the Mounties surged ahead in the fourth. Greysyn Gable (Kylertown, Pa., West Branch Area HS) tied the game with an RBI single before Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong) followed with an RBI groundout to give Mount Aloysius a 2-1 lead.
La Roche answered in the fifth, using timely hitting to regain control with a multi-run inning.
The Mounties continued to battle, responding with two runs in the bottom half. Morgan Hassen (Northern Cambria, Pa., Northern Cambria) lifted a sacrifice fly, and Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois) added another on a sac fly to cut the deficit to one.
Mount Aloysius totaled 10 hits in the game, led by Henninger's 3-for-3 performance. Hanna Stedman (Washington, Pa., Trinity) and Gable each added two hits as the Mounties threatened late, but La Roche added insurance in the seventh to secure the win.
Game Two: Mount Aloysius 10, La Roche 7
Mount Aloysius responded in a big way in Game Two, erupting for six runs in the second inning and holding off a late push to earn the split.
The Mounties opened the scoring in the first when Henninger brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. The offense broke the game open in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Ava Doyle and a two-run hit from Henninger that helped build a 7-0 advantage.
La Roche rallied with five runs in the third and eventually tied the game at 7-7, but Mount Aloysius answered.
Hassen delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth to put the Mounties back in front. In the sixth, Henninger drove in another run and Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa., Bishop Canevin) followed with an RBI double to extend the lead.
Ava Doyle (Blanchard, Pa, Central Mountain) led the Mounties with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Henninger finished with four RBIs. Cutri and Hassen each added two RBIs as Mount Aloysius finished with 12 hits.
In the circle, Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa., East Juniata) earned the win, and Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood) closed the door with two scoreless innings to secure the save.
Mount Aloysius totaled 22 hits across the doubleheader and showed its ability to respond, using a strong offensive performance in Game Two to secure the split.
