Johnstown, Pa. - The Mount Aloysius baseball team earned its first sweep of the season on Saturday, defeating Wilmington College in both ends of a doubleheader at Sargent's Stadium at the Point. The victories marked the first-ever meetings between the two programs, as the Mounties used strong pitching and timely hitting to claim wins of 3-2 and 6-4.
Game One: Mount Aloysius 3, Wilmington 2
The Mounties rallied late in the opener, walking off the Wildcats behind a clutch swing from Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa., Everett). Wilmington jumped out to an early lead with runs in the first and second innings, both driven in by Dominic Depa, to take a 2-0 advantage.
Mount Aloysius chipped away in the fifth though. Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon )Â scored on a sacrifice fly from Grove to cut the deficit to one, and moments later Tyler Day (La Plata, Md., La Plata)Â stole home as part of a double steal with Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa., Cocalico )Â to tie the game at 2-2.
From there, the story belonged to Jacob Smith (Leechburg, Pa., Kiski ). The right-hander entered in relief and delivered five dominant scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while keeping the Wildcats off the board to earn his first win of the season.
In the bottom of the seventh, Liam McCarty reached base on a one-out single and came around to score the winning run when Grove ripped a triple to right-center,  sealing the 3-2 victory.
Grove finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs, including the walk-off hit. Quade also had two hits and scored a run as the Mounties outhit Wilmington 10-5.
Game Two: Mount Aloysius 6, Wilmington 4
The Mounties completed the sweep behind another impressive pitching effort and a big sixth inning at the plate.
Coy Martino (Punxsutawney, Pa., Punxsutawney)Â earned his first collegiate win, tossing six innings while surrendering just one run without allowing a hit. The right-hander worked around four walks and struck out six to keep Wilmington off balance.
Mount Aloysius tied the game in the first when Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony)Â singled home Dickson. The Mounties added another run in the fourth as McCarty doubled down the left-field line to score Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage)Â and give MACÂ a 2-1 lead.
The game broke open in the sixth inning. Alexander launched his first collegiate homerun, a two-run blast down the right-field line to score Quade and extend the lead to 4-1. Later in the frame, Maseto delivered another RBI single that plated two more runs to push the advantage to 6-1.
Alexander led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and a home run. Maseto went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while McCarty added two hits and an RBI. Quade also contributed multiple hits across the doubleheader.
Wilmington mounted a late push with three runs in the ninth, but Scott Ranallo (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Hills) shut the door. Ranallo's three outs were all via the strikeout, as he earned the save and the 6-4 win.
With the sweep, Mount Aloysius improved to 4-4 on the season while Wilmington fell to 0-5.
