Senior Day Sweep: Mounties Take Two from Hilbert in Dramatic Fashion

Cresson, PA - Softball celebrated Senior Day in memorable fashion on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Hilbert in a dramatic doubleheader at home. In a day filled with emotion and momentum swings, the Mounties powered through a wild offensive battle in game one before riding a dominant pitching performance in game two to secure a crucial pair of victories.

Game 1: Mounties Survive Wild Slugfest, Walk Off Hilbert 17-16

On a day dedicated to celebrating its senior class, Mount Aloysius delivered one of its most chaotic and thrilling wins of the season, outlasting Hilbert, 17-16, in a back-and-forth offensive explosion.

The Mounties honored seniors Alysha Cutri (Imperial, Pa., Bishop Canevin), Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa., Crestwood), Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa., Armstrong), Brenna Watts (Thompsontown, Pa., East Juniata), Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa., DuBois), and Aislinn Myers (Sidman, Pa., Forest Hills) prior to first pitch, and came out swinging. Mount Aloysius plated three runs in the first and two more in the second before erupting for a 10-run third inning, highlighted by run-producing hits from Taylor Doyle (Blanchard, Pa., Central Mountain), Hanna Stedman (Washington, Pa., Trinity), Ava Doyle (Blanchard, Pa, Central Mountain), Greysyn Gable (Kylertown, Pa., West Branch Area HS), Cutri, and Cypher. The outburst pushed the lead to a commanding 15-3 advantage and appeared to put the game well out of reach.

But the fourth inning flipped the script entirely.

Hilbert stormed back with an insane 12-run frame, tallying hit after hit to even the score at 15-15 in one of the craziest momentum swings of the season. After the Hawks briefly took a 16-15 lead in the fifth, the Mounties answered immediately, as Henninger delivered an RBI single to knot things back up.

With the game hanging in the balance late, freshman Isabella Shupp (Danville, Pa, Meadowbrook Christian School) entered in relief and completely stabilized the contest. Shupp shut down Hilbert over the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out four to earn the victory.

The Mounties' relentless offense finished with 22 hits, led by Cutri's four-hit, four-RBI performance, while Stedman, Henninger, and Isabela Marquez (Greensburg, Pa., Greensburg Central Catholic) each collected three hits.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stedman delivered the walk-off, ripping an RBI single to right field to bring home the winning run and cap the wild 17-16 victory, sealing an unforgettable Senior Day opener for the Mounties.

Game 2: Shupp Dominates as Mounties Complete Senior Day Sweep, 4-0

After an offensive rollercoaster in game one, the Mounties turned to dominant pitching and timely hitting to secure the sweep with a 4-0 victory in game two.

Shupp stole the spotlight once again, this time delivering a complete-game shutout, the first of her career. Shupp scattered just five hits across seven innings, keeping Hilbert off balance all afternoon while sealing her second win of the day.

The Mounties provided early support in the first inning when Cutri laced an RBI double to left-center, tying the program's single-season doubles record with her 15th of the year. Mount Aloysius added insurance runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, capitalizing on consistent offensive pressure and a key RBI single from Henninger along the way.

A. Doyle led the offense with two hits and two runs scored, while seniors Cypher, Cutri, Henninger and Myers also added multi-hit performances in the game two victory.

Overall

The sweep marks a critical moment for the Mounties as it continues to fight for postseason positioning in a tightly contested conference race. With contributions up and down the lineup and a great day from Shupp in the circle, the Mounties not only celebrated their seniors in style, but also injected even more chaos into the playoff picture with a much-needed pair of victories.

What's Next

The Mounties (13-19, 8-6 AMCC) will wrap up conference play on Tuesday when they travel to second-place Penn State Altoona (20-14, 10-4 AMCC). The games are at 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
