Game Recap: Softball |

Mounties Swept at Altoona, Cutri Sets Single-Season Doubles Record

Altoona, PA - Softball wrapped up its AMCC regular season slate on Tuesday with a road doubleheader at Penn State Altoona, where the Mounties battled in two tightly contested games but ultimately fell short in a sweep. Despite strong pitching performances and flashes of offensive production, Mount Aloysius was unable to capitalize in key moments. With conference play now complete, the Mounties turn their attention to the AMCC Tournament, with seeding still to be determined and plenty left to play for heading into postseason competition.

Game One: Late Altoona Surge Sinks Mounties in Pitcher's Duel

In a tightly contested opener, the Mounties received a strong outing from Jessica Koptcho, but a pair of sixth-inning runs proved to be the difference in a 2-0 loss to Penn State Altoona.

Koptcho was sharp throughout, limiting Altoona to just four hits while striking out eight over six innings. The senior kept the game scoreless into the sixth, working out of multiple jams and keeping the Mounties within striking distance.

Offensively, however, Mount Aloysius struggled to find a rhythm against Altoona's Josselyn Nau. The Mounties managed just three hits in the game, with Hanna Stedman, Sarah Henninger, and Alysha Cutri each recording one. Despite putting the ball in play consistently, the Mounties were unable to string together hits or generate scoring opportunities.

The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth, when Altoona broke through with a sacrifice bunt to plate the game's first run. Moments later, a solo home run extended the lead to 2-0, providing all the offense the home team would need.

The Mounties went quietly in the seventh, sealing the narrow defeat in a game where pitching and defense carried the day, but timely hitting proved elusive.

Game Two: Sixth-Inning Swing Turns Tide as Mounties Drop Nightcap

The Mounties showed more offensive life in game two and even carried a late lead, but a five-run sixth inning by Penn State Altoona flipped the script in a 5-3 setback to complete the sweep.

Softball struck first in the second inning, manufacturing a run as Aislinn Myers delivered a sacrifice fly to score Greysyn Gable. The Mounties continued to apply pressure and extended their lead in the sixth, highlighted by aggressive baserunning. Ava Doyle swiped home during a double steal, and Cutri followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Behind another strong outing from Isabella Shupp, the Mounties appeared in control through five innings. Shupp kept Altoona off the scoreboard, working efficiently and limiting hard contact.

However, the sixth inning unraveled quickly. Altoona capitalized on a combination of timely hits and Mountie miscues, stringing together multiple RBI knocks to plate five runs and take a 5-3 lead.

The Mounties collected seven hits in the game, with A. Doyle and Stedman each tallying two, but were unable to answer in the seventh inning.

Notably, Cutri's strong finish to conference play comes on the heels of a historic performance over the weekend, as the senior recorded her 16th double during Sunday's sweep of Hilbert, setting a new Mount Aloysius single-season program record.

Despite the tough finish, the Mounties closed out AMCC play with postseason implications still in flux. Mount Aloysius is currently in position for the No. 6 seed but could climb as high as the No. 4 seed depending on the outcome of Friday's matchup between Pitt-Bradford and Alfred State.

The Mounties will officially wrap up the regular season on Thursday when they travel to Juniata (14-22). The games will be played at 3 and 5 pm in Huntingdon, PA.
