DuBois, PA - Mountie softball continued its run through the AMCC Tournament on Thursday afternoon, knocking off second-seeded Penn State Altoona, 4-0, at Heindl Field in DuBois. With the victory, the Mounties improve to 2-0 in postseason play after also defeating third-seeded Alfred State yesterday.
After being swept by Altoona just over a week ago, Mount Aloysius answered in a big way when it mattered most, earning a spot in Friday's winner's bracket final against top-seeded Penn State Behrend. First pitch is scheduled for noon in DuBois, with the winner advancing to Saturday's AMCC Championship game.
How It Unfolded:
The matchup remained scoreless through five innings as both pitchers traded zeros, but the Mounties finally broke through in the sixth. Ava Doyle launched her first career home run to left-center field to give Mount Aloysius a 1-0 advantage and provide all the offense the Mounties would ultimately need.
Mount Aloysius added insurance in the seventh inning after Maggie Cypher tripled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single from Aislinn Myers. Later in the inning, Hanna Stedman delivered a two-run double to right-center field to score Isabela Marquez and Greysyn Gable and extend the lead to 4-0.
Jessica Koptcho was dominant in the circle yet again, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just five hits and striking out five. The senior worked around two walks and stranded seven Altoona runners in the victory.
The Mounties finished with nine hits offensively, led by Myers and Marquez with two apiece. Ava Doyle hit a solo shot, Cypher added a triple and Stedman drove in two runs with her late double.
Penn State Altoona threatened several times throughout the game, but the Mounties defense and Koptcho consistently came up with key outs to preserve the shutout victory.
Tomorrow's game versus #1 Penn State Behrend will begin at 12:00 PM at Heindl Field in DuBois, PA.
