WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Women's volleyball was back in action tonight and continued its strong stretch of play Tuesday night, earning its fifth consecutive victory with a 3-1 triumph over the Waynesburg Yellowjackets at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Mounties (6-3) took the opening set, 25-17, before Waynesburg answered with a 25-19 victory in the second. Mount Aloysius responded by taking the third set, 25-21, before closing out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth.
Set 1
Mount Aloysius came out strong in the opening set, using an efficient offensive attack to take control early. The Mounties finished the frame with eight kills and committed just one fewer attack error than Waynesburg. Mount Aloysius eventually pulled away to take the opening set, 25-17, and grab an early 1-0 advantage.
Set 2
Waynesburg responded in the second set though, putting together its strongest offensive performance of the night. The Yellowjackets recorded 14 kills and forced the Mounties to play from behind for much of the frame. Mount Aloysius continued to battle and finished with 10 kills of its own, but Waynesburg evened the match with a 25-19 victory.
Set 3
The Mounties answered right back in the third set. Mount Aloysius produced its best offensive showing of the match to that point, recording 14 kills. The Mounties also limited Waynesburg to a .189 hitting percentage and finished the set with four attack errors. The balanced attack helped Mount Aloysius regain control of the match, taking the third set 25-21 and moving one set away from the win.
Set 4
With the match on the line, the Mounties saved their best offensive performance for the fourth set. Mount Aloysius posted a match-best 16 kills, while Waynesburg managed nine kills. The Mounties also continued to pressure the Yellowjackets from the service line, helping them close out the match with a 25-17 fourth-set win and a 3-1 victory.
Reigning AMCC Offensive Player of the Week Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) was once again at the front of the Mountie attack, finishing with a match-high 19 kills. Barr also recorded two service aces and a block while helping Mount Aloysius finish with 48 kills as a team.
Jasmine Coble (Lewisberry, Pa., Red Land) turned in her best performance in a Mountie uniform to this point, recording a career-high eight kills while adding a block. Loren Stipanovich (Cresson, Pa, Penn Cambria) also provided a strong offensive contribution with seven kills.
Setters Kiersten Cummings (Las Vegas, Nev, Nevada State) and Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) helped keep the Mountie offense moving throughout the match, finishing with 20 and 19 assists, respectively. Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) led the defensive effort with 19 digs, while Reagan Karcher (Marietta, Ohio, Marietta) added 11 digs and four service aces. Wilson contributed six digs.
As a team, Mount Aloysius finished with advantages in kills (48-39), service aces (8-6), assists (43-39) and digs (65-55). The victory extends Mount Aloysius' winning streak to five matches, with the Mounties improving to 6-3 on the season.
The Mounties will now turn their attention to the start of AMCC play. Mount Aloysius will travel to Bradford, Pa., on Saturday afternoon to take on the Pitt-Bradford Panthers (0-8). First serve is now scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
