EBENSBURG, Pa. - The Mount Aloysius women's tennis team picked up a historic AMCC victory Wednesday afternoon, defeating Pitt-Greensburg, 5-2, at the Ebensburg Tennis Center. The win marked the Mounties' first victory over the Bobcats since September 15, 2019, nearly seven years to the day.
Mount Aloysius (2-3, 2-2 AMCC) set the tone in doubles play, sweeping all three matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Morgan Allen (Johnstown, Pa., Westmont Hilltop) and Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) edged Gabi Moder and Jazzy Cherry, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles, while Kaylee Mento (Cresson, Pa., Penn Cambria) and Samara Scott (Claysville, Pa., Central Catholic (W.Va.) earned a 6-3 victory at No. 2. Mariah Hall (New Enterprise, Pa., Northern Bedford) and Masie Reed (Shamokin, Pa., Our Lady of Lourdes) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
The Mounties continued their strong play in singles, securing victories in four of the six matches. Kitchen cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while Mento followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Scott added a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, and Hall closed out the Mounties' scoring with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 5.
Pitt-Greensburg claimed the remaining two singles matches, but both went down to the wire. Allen battled Gabi Moder at No. 1 singles before falling, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3, while Reed dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 decision to Jenna Eutsey at No. 6.
With the 5-2 victory, the Mounties improve to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in AMCC play.
Mount Aloysius will continue conference play Sunday when it welcomes Penn State Altoona to the Ebensburg Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. first serve. The Mounties will look to bounce back against the Lions after falling, 7-0, in their previous meeting on September 8.
