Cresson, PA- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team faced off against 2nd place Penn State Behrend on Saturday in a match that would decide the AMCC Regular Season Champion. The match was about as even as it could be as it finished with a 16-14 score in the deciding fifth set.
The Mounties were able to take care of a slow starting Behrend side in the first set, holding on for a 25-23 victory. The Mounties struggled in set two as they collected as many errors as they did kills, losing the set 16-25. The lone highlight in the second set was Libero
Kylee Clawson collected her 1,000th career dig in just under 2 season in a Mountie Uniform. After Penn State Behrend took the third 23-25, the Mounties came back with their strongest performance of the match. In the fourth set they tallied 15 kills on 35 attacks, giving them a .314 hitting percentage. They used that efficient effort to win the set 25-16. After mirroring each other in the first four sets, the two teams played a hard fought 5th set that saw the final score go more than the required 15 points. The Mounties were able to jump in front early, compilling a 8-3 lead, but were unable to hold on as Behrend came back and won the set 16-14.
Individually the Mounties were led by
Machala Gibbons,
Sarah Fisher and
Macy King. Gibbons collected a match high 19 kills on 44 attempts. She also had a match high 25 digs. Fisher finished with 15 kills in the game and King tied her highest output of the season finishing with 12 kills.
Jessica Bressler dished out 35 assists in the match while also collecting 3 service aces on the day. Clawson collected 17 digs in the match along with her milestone 1,000th.
The Mounties now sit at 16-9 with a 7-1 AMCC record. This record puts them in a tie for first place in the conference, however puts them behind Penn State Behrend due to the head to head result. They have clinched the 2nd seed in the conference tournament, which earns them a first round bye in the AMCC Tournament. This week, they will play a non-conference match against Lycoming on Thursday in their last home action of the year. They will then head to Buffalo over the weekend to complete their regular season at Medaille College.
