Frostburg, MD - The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team faced two challenging games at the Jim Crawley Classic over the weekend at Frostburg State University.
On Saturday they took on Christopher Newport, who were ranked 20th in the country in the d3hoops.com preseason poll. The Mounties lost the game by a score of 66-39. Mount Aloysius got off to a slow start as they were outscored by CNU 34-13 in the first half, however they finished strong as they were able to win the final period of the game, outscoring the Captains 16-13 in the 4th quarter.
The Mounties were led by
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll). Sammarco finished with 12 points, shooting 4-for-6 from beyond the arc in the game.
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) also finished in double digits with 11 points.
Caroline Showalter (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood Antis) led the Mounties on the boards, hauling in 8 rebounds, while
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA/Bishop McCort) dished out 8 assists.
On Sunday, the Mounties returned to the court to face the hosts, Frostburg State. A slow start from the field doomed the Mounties again, as they fell by a score of 72-46. Offensively the Mounties were led by Sammarco again, who finished with 15 points, hitting 5-of-9 from deep.
Sammarco represented the Mounties on the All-Tournament Team as she averaged 13.5 points per game while shooting 60% from three-point range.
The Mounties will return to action over the holiday weekend as they will travel to Eastern, PA to play in the Sisters of Mercy Tournament in Dallas, PA. The will take on Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday and then Misericordia on Sunday.
