Erie, PA - The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team traveled to Erie on Sunday to take on Penn State Behrend. Despite a holding a slight edge through the first three quarters, the Mounties were unable to hold on they were outscored 24-14 in the final period, resulting in a 60-51 loss.
The Mounties jumped out to an early lead as they held the hosts scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the game. They were unable to take advantage of the 5-minute drought however, as they were only able to score 4 points of their own. After Behrend scored, the Mounties were able to use two consecutive jumpers from
Hannah Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) to push the Mountie lead to 8. The Mounties followed this up with a 4 minute scoreless streak of their own, which allowed Behrend to tie the game at 11 after 1 quarter. The second period saw the Mounties fall behind, however a 5-0 run over the last 4:50 of the half gave the Mounties a 1 point lead at the break. The run was capped off with a
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) jumper in the paint with 37 seconds to go.
The third quarter was back and forth between the two squads as the lead changed 6 times. The Mounties used some timely baskets to continue to swap leads including two threes from
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) and one by Kendrick. Penn State Behrend came out firing in the 4th, starting the period on a 9-1 run.
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) did her best to stem the tide with a basket inside followed by a three from the corner, however the Mounties were unable to complete the comeback.
The Mounties were led by Kendrick and Robinson who finished with 15 points a piece. Kendrick hauled in 8 rebounds including three on the offensive end.
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, Pa/Bishop McCort) chipped in on both ends as she dished out 8 assists and also had 8 steals.
The loss moves the Mounties to 2-8 on the year with a 2-3 record in AMCC play. They will hit the court again on Monday as they take on Chatham University in their final game before the holiday break. The game begins at 5:30 PM in the ACWC.
