Buffalo, NY- The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team traveled to Buffalo, NY this weekend when they visited the defending conference champion Hilbert Hawks. The Mounties stayed close to the Hawks throughout most of the game, but ultimately lost the game 63-52.
The Lady Mounties started off strong as
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) hit two early threes to give the Mounties a four point lead. After the two threes the Mounties would struggle offensively as they only scores 1 point on a free throw for the remaining 5:37 of the opening quarter, falling behind 8-7 after one.
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) started off the second quarter with a bucket, however the Hawks went on a 10-2 run over the next 6 minutes of play to build a 7 point lead. Another Sammarco three cut the lead to 4 with 3:48 remaining, however Hilbert answered with a three of their own to force the Mounties to take a time out.Â
The third quarter wa sa back and forth affair that saw the Mounties unable to make a run as Hilbert respond with a basket after each Mount Aloysius make. Senior
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain)Â came alive in the third period, scoring 10 of the 15 Mountie points in the period on 4-4 shooting. In the fourth, the Mounties attempted a comeback as a
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA/Bishop McCort) three with 3:26 to go cut the Hilbert lead to 5. The Mountie comeback attempt would fall short from there as Hilbert made their free throws down the stretch to build the margin back to 12 points.
Kendrick led the Mounties with 17 points, including 15 in the second half when she didn't miss a shot, going 6-6 from the field including 2-2 from three and making her only free throw attempt. Robinson also put in a strong effort as she finished with 14 points in 32 minutes of play. Gibbons was the other double digit scorer, finishing with 12 points.Â
The Mounties (2-7, 2-2) will have finals week off as they will take the time off to prepare for their final conference game of the Fall half of the season. They will travel to Erie, PA to take on Penn State Behrend on Sunday December 16th starting at 2:00PM.
