Cresson, PA- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team kicked off their season Friday night at the newly renovated Soccer and Lacrosse field at the Ray and Louise Walker field complex. Despite a strong attacking effort, The Mounties were unable to score against Goucher College, as the contest finished 0-0 after 2 overtimes.
Under the lights for the first time at home, Mount Aloysius collected 18 shots with 9 of them on net over the 110 minutes of play.Â
Joshua Devlin led the Mounties attack, registering 8 shots with 3 of them on goal. Freshman Winger
Pau Aran had four shots in the game and three of the best scoring chances for the Mounties. With 7 minutes remaining in the first half, Aran skillfully dribbled around the Goucher defensive line and rang a shot from 10 yards out off the near post.Â
Aran's second chance came with 13 minutes in regulation. Freshman
Joshua Christie hit a well placed cross from the right wing and Aran was able to win a looping header which was looping over the Goucher goalkeeper who was able to tap it over the bar for a corner kick. Goucher was again saved by miraculous goalie play with just over two minutes left in the contest. After some excellent combination play down the right wing, Midfielder
James Maddison had a low cross played back to him near the 18 yard box. Maddison fired a one time shot which was saved by Goucher's Daniel Hendry. The rebound stayed in the penalty area and Aran attempted to win the game for the Mounties, however Hendry was able to recover quickly to make another diving save to preserve the tie.
The Mount Aloysius defense put forth a strong performance, allowing only 4 Gopher shots, with one coming on goal. Goalkeeper
James Eyre saved the lone shot on goal to record his first shut out of the season.Â
The Mounties (0-0-1) will hit the road for their next game on Monday September 4th at 4:00 PM, when they travel to St. Davids PA to face Eastern University.
