Mounties Comeback Against Hood, Gibbons Sets Program Record

Cresson, PA- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team completed a thrilling comeback victory Thursday night as they defeated Hood College 3 games to 2. Sophmore Machala Gibbons had a record setting performance, as she topped Coach Brianna Baker's single match record for kills in a match.

The Mountie's started off strong as they took the first set in the match by a score of 25-10. In the set the Mounties hit an outstanding .500 finishing with 19 kills. The. Following two sets were back and forth affairs with each team moving into the lead at some point, however Hood was able to come out on top winning both games 25-22, giving them a 2 sets to 1 advantage. The Mounties were able to get the momentum back on their side in the 4th set. Both teams were very efficient hitting ober .430 in the set, but the Mounties were able to pull away late to tie the match and force the deciding fifth set. In the deciding set, the Mounties jumped ahead early building up a 10-5 lead. They were then able to coast to the finish to complete the comeback and pick up their third consecutive win.

Gibbons finished the match with 33 kills. She reached this record with astounding efficiency as she was able to convert on 70.5% of her attacks for the night. She also chipped in defensively, collecting 16 digs. If it wasn;t for Gibbon's historical performance, Senior middle hitter Sarah Fisher would have been the star of the game. Sarah finished the night with 21 kills of her own, on 54.5% of her attacks. She also chipped in two blocks. Jessica Bressler and Emma Pevarnik both set the table well for their teammates, as they picked up 35 and 20 assists respectively. Libero Kylee Clawson had another big game, registering 30 digs, but she also contributed offensively, tallying 4 service aces. 

The Mounties (3-5) will get right back to it on Friday as they travel to New Jersey to play in the Ramapo College Roadrunner Invitational. They will play 3 games over two days. The tournament will kick off at 6:00 when the Mounties play Penn State Harrisburg and will follow that up against the host, Ramapo College, at 8:00. They will finish off their invitational Saturday morning, when they will take on Bard College at 11:00 AM
