Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mountie Men Take Down LaRoche

Cresson, PA- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team continued their winning ways on Tuesday, as they defeated LaRoche College 3-0. The win marked the Mounties 8th straight victory. On the streak, the Mounties have scored 23 goals while allowing only 1.

In a hard fought game that included 31 fouls, the Mounties were able to control most of the possession, amassing 34 shots while their opponents only registered 6. Joshua Devlin, and Jonathan Fernandez each tallied 7 shots while Joshua Christie, James Maddison and Erik Johansson all had 4 attempts.

While the Mounties were registering a large number of shots, their first two goals came from an unusual place. Senior center back Pete Smerecky was able to find the net twice in the first half to provide the Mounties with a 2-0 lead at the break. After Johansson attempted a shot from the edge of the box, the ball ricocheted off a number of LaRoche and Mount Aloysius players. The ball landed on Smerecky's right foot and he blasted a shot through traffic into the net. His second goal came with just under 2 minutes left in the half. Smerecky intercepted a pass at the midfield line and made a 20 yard run through traffic before laying the ball off to a teammate. The Mounties made a few more passes and Christopher Moses ripped a shot from 20 yards away which the keeper parried away to his right. Smerecky, who had continued his run into the box, ran onto the rebound and calmly put the shot past the keeper for his brace. The goals were Pete's second and third of the year.

The second half was a continued hard fought contest between the two teams, but Josh Devlin was able to put the game away in the 88th minute. As LaRoche was attacking Mount Aloysius was able to nick the ball away and counter back up the field. Jonathan Ferndandez played a long through ball behind the defense which the streaking Devlin caught up to around the 18. Devlin slid into his shot and toe-poked the ball beyond the goalkeeper for his 3rd score of the year.

Junior goalkeeper James Eyre had another strong effort in net. He tallied 4 saves in the match, including two from close range when the result of the game was still in doubt. Eyre recorded his AMCC leading 8th win and 7th shut out. He also holds a .828 save percentage and .55 goals against average, both good for 2nd in the conference.

The Mounties (8-1-1) will travel to Buffalo, NY to take on Medaille College on Saturday. The Mounties will be looking to get revenge on last years AMCC Tournament champions, who defeated them 1-0 in the semi-final match.
