Buffalo, NY - In a back-and-forth affair featuring two of the AMCC's best teams, the Mount Aloysius men's soccer team came from behind to earn a 3-2 victory over host Medaille College on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides had chances early in the contest and the Mounties scored first when
Joshua Devlin stole a pass from a Medaille defender and went through to goal before tucking a shot past the Maverick keeper. The Mounties led for just under 6 minutes before Medaille evened the score 1-1 at the 17:37 mark. Mount Aloysius had two clear scoring chances in the first half to regain the lead. 28 minutes into play,
Pau Aran took a pass from Devlin and was clear on goal before the Medaille goalie made a point-blank save to keep the game tied. Minutes later,
Jonathan Fernandez hit a shot that squeezed past the keeper, but a charging
Ludvig Hegdal was ruled offsides when he put the rebound attempt into the back of the net.
After the two sides went into halftime 1-1, Medaille struck first in the second half when Lachlan Beever netted his second goal of the match 12 minutes into the second half. Mount Aloysius would respond 14 minutes later when Devlin took a throw in from
Cameron Kemp and beat a defender before striking a shot to the far, upper corner of the net to tie the game at 2-2. Minutes prior, Kemp had a strike from 30 yards out that was tipped over the crossbar.
With the game even at 2-2, the Mounties pushed for the game-winning goal and found it with 8 minutes left in the game. Aran took a pass from Devlin and lofted a cross to the back post, where
Joshua Christie rose up and chested the ball into the back of the net.
Mount Aloysius allowed just one shot over the final 8 minutes, which was a Medaille strike from the top of the box that Kemp cleared away out of bounds.
James Eyre made two saves in net for Mount Aloysius.
The Mounties improve to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. They will host Penn State Altoona on Wednesday evening following the women's contest.
