Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team was unable to hold onto a late lead Saturday, and lost to D'Youville in overtime by a score of 70-66.
The Mounties fell behind early as D'Youville used a hot start to build a 10-5 lead. The Mounties battled back as
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) hit a three to start the rally and
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA/Bishop McCort) made two quick baskets from the lane to put the Mounties up 2. The Spartans responded quickly, as they went on a 9-0 run of their own to build a 7 point lead. After a time out, the Mounties closed the quarter with three unanswered free throws to cut the deficit to 4 after one period of play. Mount Aloysius followed this with a dominant second quarter.
Hannah Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) started the quarter with a three from the wing. The Mounties took the lead with 6:33 to go on a
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) layup. This started a 9-2 run that finished with a Kendrick three.Â
Kendrick started the half with a three to put the Mounties up 8, however D'Youvelle answered and were able to cut the lead to 2 with just over 6 minutes in the quarter. The teams traded baskets for the final 6 minutes of the period, with the Mounties lead fluctuating between 1 and 4 points. D'Youville continued to erase the Mountie lead, taking a one point lead with just over 8 minutes to go. The Mounties answered with a 13-5 run to restore the 7 point lead. Gibbons started the rally with a three from the wing. The rally included 5 points from Robinson and another three from Kitko and finished on a jumper from Gibbons. From that point on the Mounties struggled to score as they went scoreless for the final 3:13 of the game. After Danielle Hore made a put back lay-up with 10 seconds to go to tie the game at 59, Robinson had a shot to win the game in regulation however her driving lay-up attempt bounced off the rim to send the game to overtime.Â
The Mounties scored the first 4 points of the extra period on a jumper from Robinson and two Kendrick free throws. D'Youville hit threes on three consecutive possessions to take the lead, with a Kendrick jumper mixed in to put the Spartans up 2 with 25 seconds to go. After a time out, Mount Aloysius was able to to get an open look as Kendrick lined up a three from the left wing, however her attempt went off the front rim and was collected by a D'Youville defender.Â
Kendrick finished the game with 24 points to lead the Mounties. Robinson scored 16 and grabbed 9 rebounds while Gibbons also scored double figures, finishing with 11.
The Mounties (3-12, 3-5) will go back on the road for their mid-week game as they will take on Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday at 6 PM.
