Lady Mounties Lose at La Roche

Pittsburgh, PA- The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team lost to La Roche College on Wednesday night by a score of 80-48.

The Mounties struggled against a La Roche side that finds itself in a tie for first in the AMCC. Breanna Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) started things off with a three pointer to put the Mounties up 1, however it was the last lead the Mounties would hold as La Roche would score the next 7 points and go on to outscore the Mounties by 10 in the quarter. The closest the Mounties would get to the Redhawks was after a 5-0 run with 3 minutes to go. Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA/Bishop McCort) hit a three and after a defensive stop Kendrick scored a put back lay-up to cut the lead to 4. La Roche responded with an 17-3 run at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter to build an 18 point lead. The teams battled for the remainder of the first half with Kendrick hitting a layup with 18 seconds left to put the La Roche lead at 15 at halftime.

In the second half, the Mounties scored the first two baskets to get the lead to 11 on Kendrick layups, however La Roche wold respond again, pushing their lead to 17 with 4:22 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, giving the Redhawks an 18 point lead heading into the final quarter. Defensive pressure finished the Mounties off in the fourth, as they were outscored 20-6 in the final frame. The Mounties were only able to convert one field goal, a Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) layup in the first minute of the quarter.

Kendrick led the Mounties in scoring for the third straight game as she finished with 22. Over the three game span, Kendrick has averaged 23.3 points per game. Gibbons and Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) each finished with 9 points. Gibbons was perfect from the field as she was 3-3 shooting including hitting her lone three point attempt and making both free throws she attempted.

The Mounties (2-11 Overall, 2-4 AMCC) will hit the road again this weekend. They travel to Northern Pennsylvania to take on AMCC foe Pitt-Bradford on Saturday. The game begins at 2:00 PM.
