Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mounties Use Dominant 2nd Quarter to Defeat Pitt-Bradford

Bradford, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team ended a five-game losing streak as they picked up a win at Pitt-Bradford on Saturday by a score of 57-38.

The Mounties had a slow start offensively as they were unable to score in the first 5 minutes of play. While struggling to score early, they were putting in a strong defensive performance as they only allowed Pitt-Bradford to score 4 points of their own in the span. When the Mounties did finally score, they quickly erased the deficit and took a lead as Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) hit two free throws and Hannah Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) hit a three on consecutive possessions to put the Mounties up 1. The lead would not last as Bradford responded with a three of their own and would work to expand the lead to 5 points after one quarter of play.

The Mounties stepped up in a big way in the second quarter. After Pitt-Bradford started the period with a layup to push the lead to 7, The Mounties would hold the Panthers scoreless for the remainder of the period, while scoring 20 points of their own to build a 13 point halftime lead. After a Kitko jumper started the rally, Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA/Redbank Valley) scored 6 straight points to give the Mounties the lead. Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) and Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) each scored 5 points in the period, including a buzzer beating three from Robinson.

Things stayed the same after the break as Kendrick made a lay-up and Sammarco hit another 3 to push the run to 25 unanswered. Pitt-Bradford was able to score two baskets to end the scoreless run, however the Mounties continued to build their lead with another 10 point run including two more three pointers, one from Kendrick and one from Sammarco. The Mountie lead reached its hightest with a 1:15 left in the period after another Robinson three put the Mounties up 30. Pitt-Bradford was able to cut into the lead in the 4th, however the strong middle periods were enough to give the Mounties the victory.

Kendrick and Sammarco both finished with 13 points for the Mounties. Sammarco scored her 13 points on 41% shooting from the field and 43% from beyond the arc. Robinson also finished in double digits as she had 10 points. Machala Gibbons scored 6 points in the game, but filled the stat sheet in other areas as she dished out 10 assists and grabbed 6 steals. As a team, the Lady Mounties put in a perfect day from the line as they went 10-10 on free throws.

The win moves Mount Aloysius to 3-11 on the season with a 3-4 record in conference play. They currently sit in 7th place in the conference, just one game out of a playoff spot. They will return to action on Saturday when they host D'Youville College, beginning at 1:00 PM.
