Mounties Keep Fans Entertained for Five Sets at Pink Out Game

CRESSON -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team played host to La Roche University on Wednesday night. It was the team's annual Pink Out Game, benefitting the Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Care Center.

The Mounties kept the fans interested all night long, as they needed all five sets to finish off the Redhawks.

The two teams started out the first set, with La Roche getting out to an early lead. Mount Aloysius was able to tie it multiple times, but did not grab the lead until late in the set. They were able to grab a 21-20 lead. Following a few traded points, as it was tied 22 all, the Redhawks ran off three straight points to give themselves the first set, 25-22. Mount Aloysius hit a putrid .047 in the set, which included ten hitting errors.

The Mounties came back with a vengeance in the second set. A service error by the Mounties would make the score 14-13 Mount Aloysius. That was the closest La Roche would get. Mount Aloysius scored 11 of the final 14 points to cruise to a second set victory. They were able to hit .243 in the set and only committed four errors. La Roche made more errors than kills in the set.

Set number three started much like the second set ended. After a service error by La Roche on the first point, Ashlee Parrish (Northern Cambria, PA, Northern Cambria) would have her chance to serve. She would serve 11 straight Mountie points, which included two of the team's 12 aces on the night. Mount Aloysius would not stop there, they hit a blistering .393, as they would go on to win the set 25-8. Five different Mounties picked up kills in the set, as well.

In the fourth set, the Mounties looked to close out the Redhawks. They held a slim lead late, with a 22-20 advantage. With their backs against the wall, La Roche would go on to score four straight points and five of the final six, to even the game at two sets to two.

The final set gave the fans their money's worth, as they saw ten ties and seven lead changes in the set, which was only played to 15. The Mounties found themselves at a game point disadvantage, trailing 14-13. With some help, two La Roche errors, they were able to get themselves back into a great position, ahead 15-14. Needing to win by two, Ava Myers (Gallitzin, PA, Bishop Carroll) was able to get the 50th assist of the night from Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield), as she hit her attack attempt off the Redhawk blockers and it sailed out of bounds, giving her the game-ending kill.

The Mounties had four players with double-figure kills, led by Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) with 18. Parrish had 17 and only commited three hitting errors on the night, to give her a .389 hitting percentage. Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA, Redbank Valley) had 11 kills, while Myers had 10 kills and a game-high four blocks. Gibbons had a double-double with 12 digs to her name. The other double-double came from Pevarnik, who had her season-high of 50 assists, as well as a season-high 21 digs. Kylee Clawson (Altoona, PA, Altoona) had a game-high 29 digs.

Mount Aloysius improves to 12-5 on the season, including a perfect 3-0 in AMCC competition. They will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Buffalo, NY, to take on D'Youville.
