Mounties Silence Barons, Clinch #3 Seed in AMCC Tournament

Cresson -- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team hosted Franciscan in the regular season finale on Tuesday night. They were able to pick up their third consectutive shutout and win 1-0.

The first game of Tuesday's doubleheader featured the teams sitting in the third and fourth positions in the conference rankings. Winner would end up third and loser would fall to fourth place.

Gameplay was very even for the majority of the match, as Mount Aloysius tallied 14 shots, six of which were on target, and Franciscan took 11 shots, with four landing on goal. Each team attempted seven corners and had double-digit fouls.

Both Franciscan and Mount Aloysius had scoring opportunities in the first half, but none would find the back of the net. The game would head into halftime at 0-0.

Into the second half, not much changed. The teams exchanged shots on goal through the first 15 minutes of the half. In the 64th minute, Franciscan committed a foul, in the box, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for the Mounties. Sophomore Pau Aran (Barcelona, Spain, Colegio Inglés Playa del Carmen) would take the PK and slide it by the Baron goalkeeper, to push ahead 1-0. Aran's goal was his eighth of the season.

Each team was able to attempt two more shots on goal, with the Barons getting their last one inside the final two minutes. Both keepers kept the opportunities out, and the final score ended at 1-0.

Senior James Eyre (West Bilney, England, Nicholas Hamond Academy) recorded his third straight shutout in goal for Mount Aloysius, while recording four saves.

By pulling out the win, Mount Aloysius finishes the regular season 8-2 in AMCC play. They also earned the number three seed in the upcoming AMCC Tournament. They will host Pitt-Bradford on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Pitt-Bradford earned the #6 seed. The winner of Saturday's game will move on to play Penn State Behrend.
