Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Mounties Fall Twice in Virginia

Harrisonburg, VA -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team traveled to Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday night for their last two non-conference matchups of the regular season. They played the host, Eastern Mennonite and followed that up by playing Bridgewater. They fell in both games, but managed to make both scores 3-1.

GAME 1
The Mounties got off to a slow start in Game 1, as they hit .206. They had a lead midway through at 11-8, until EMU went on an 11-1 run to take control. Mount Aloysius was unable to overcome it and dropped the first set 25-17.

Set 2 was a back and forth set, with both teams exchanges leads and having multiple ties. The Mounties had a game point at 24-20 before the Royals scored four straight to tie. They continued to trade points to get to 29-29. EMU put together the last two points of the set to win 31-29.

Mount Aloysius got a set back in the third, in part, thanks to EMU hitting a measly .054 and committing eight hitting errors. The Mounties had control right out of the gate, as they scored the first three points and never relinquished the lead.

In the final set, Mount Aloysius held a slim lead at 14-13. EMU would finish the set on a 12-5 run and send the Mounties off, 25-19. The two teams combined to commit only four hitting errors in the final set.

GAME 2
The Mounties opponent in the second game was a strong one, as Bridgewater came in with a 21-5 record overall. The came out strong but would eventually fall to the Eagles 3-1.

They split sets one and two, with Mount Aloysius actually out-hitting the Eagles in both. Through the first two sets, Bridgewater committed 15 errors while the Mounties committed eight.

Mount Aloysius hit a wall in the final two sets, as they only scored 26 total points, losing 25-12 and 25-14. Bridgewater used a 9-1 run in the third set and a 9-2 run in the fourth to put the Mounties away. The Mounties also hurt themselves in the hitting area, by committing more errors than kills, coming away with negative hitting percentages in both sets three and four.

Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) led the attack with 28 kills and 30 digs in the night of competition. Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA, Redbank Valley) also added multiple double-digit kill games, including a 14 kill, 0 error performance in the loss to Eastern Mennonite. Setter Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) registered two double-doubles en route to 80 total assists and 28 digs for the night. The defense was led by Abigail Fletcher (Salem, VA, Glenvar), who registered a team-high 36 digs between the two games.

Mount Aloysius will return to the court on Saturday, for their regular season finale, against Medaille. Saturday's game will also be Senior Day.

The Mounties are currently in a three-way tie for second place in the AMCC. With regular season play finishing on Saturday, they will have to wait to find out their tournament fate.
