Mounties Fall at Penn State Altoona

Altoona -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team traveled to Altoona for the AMCC Game of the Week, against Penn State Altoona on Tuesday night. They fell to the Lions in straight sets.

Mount Aloysius had a rough night hitting, as Penn State Altoona hit for a better percentage in every set of the night. The Mounties hit .116 compared to .222 for the Lions.

The Mounties had a lead midway through the set at 15-11. PSA would score three consecutive points to cut the lead to 15-14. The difference would stay within two points, as the Mounties held a slim advantage, until PSA tied the set at 20. Mount Aloysius would take a 21-20 lead on a kill by Ashlee Parrish (Northern Cambria, PA, Northern Cambria). The Lions would strike back and score the final five points of the set to win 25-21, and take a 1-0 advantage.

In set two, the early points were kept close as PSA held a 11-10 lead. Mount Aloysius would score six consecutive points to take a 16-11 lead. The Lions would come back to eventually tie the set at 20. The Mounties were able to score the following three points to get a 23-20 lead. However, the Lions still had some fight left in them, as they scored six of the last seven points. Three of the Mounties eight, second set, attacking errors came during the final stretch.

The final set was all Lions, as they got out to a hot start. They started with a 7-2 lead, then as they held a 10-5 advantage, they scored eight straight points to extend their lead to 18-5. The Mounties tried to fight back, but eventually fell in the third set, 25-16.

Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) and Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) produced double-doubles in the loss for Mount Aloysius. Gibbons had 13 kills and 11 digs, while Pevarnik had 31 assists and 12 digs.  added 20 digs, defensively, for the Mounties. Parrish added 12 kills.

The Mounties fell to 4-1 in AMCC play and 13-6 overall. They will travel to Valley Forge on Thursday for a non-conference matchup, before a nine-day layoff leading into their AMCC tri-match, with Alfred State and Franciscan.
