Buffalo, NY- On a crazy final day of the regular season that saw none of the 6 AMCC Tournament seeds set, the Mount Aloysius Women's basketball team traveled to Buffalo to take on Medaille College. Prior to the game, the Mounties could finish anywhere between 4th place and 7th place. After a slow start that saw the Mounties down 12 at the half, a late comeback attempt fell just short as they fell to the Mavericks 63-53.
The Mavericks capitalized early as they scored 12 of the firs 14 points of the game to build a 10 point lead within the first 5 minutes. The Mounties were able to close the lead with a 4 minute spurt that saw them close to within 3. A
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) jump shot started the run with 4:38 to go in the period. After two
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) free throws,
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA/Bishop McCort) drilled a three to finish the unanswered run. Medaille was able to finish the quarter with two three pointers in the final minute to restore a 9 point lead. In the second period, the Maverick lead fluctuated between 6 and 11 points throughout the majority of play. Kendrick kept the Mounties afloat in the period as she scored 10 of the Mounties' 12 points in the quarter.
The second half did not start any better for Mount Aloysius as they started with another long scoring drought that saw the deficit expand to 18 points. The Mounties began to chip into the lead with 2 minutes to go in the quarter after Gibbons hit a jumper to start a 6-0 run to close the third. She punctuated the spurt as well, finishing off a three point play in the final minute to set the lead at 12 points heading into the final period. The Mounties started slowly again in the fourth, seeing their deficit grow to 17 points with just under 7 minutes remaining in their season.
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) started a furious comeback as she hit two free throws and followed them up with a three pointer with 5 minutes to go. After a Kendrick layup, Robinson hit another three to get the lead back to double digits. In the final minute the Mounties edged closer with another Kendrick layup and a Gibbons three pointer after a loose ball to put the Mounties down 5. Gibbons' three was the final high point for the Mounties as they were unable to score in the final minute and saw their opponents put the game away from the free throw line.
Kendrick led the way for the Mounties, scoring 18 points and pulling in 6 rebounds. Gibbons scored 13 while grabbing a team high 7 rebounds and recording 6 steals. Robinson also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Despite the loss, the Mounties still had a chance to sneak into the conference tournament with some outside help. In other conference action, Pitt-Bradford held onto a late lead against Penn State Behrend, which gave the Mounties the final push into the post season. The Mounties finish their regular season with a 8-17 record overall and 8-10 in conference play, and are the 6th seed in the tournament and will travel to Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday for the first round of the tournament. Tip-off for the game will be at 7PM. The Mounties were victorious in both of their regular season meetings with the Panthers. They won their first game on the road by a score of 57-38, and held on for a win on Senior Day by a score of 54-50.
